Intensive introduction to low-frequency electromagnetics modeling with COMSOL Multiphysics®

If you are a current or potential user of COMSOL Multiphysics who wants to learn how to use the software for AC/DC modeling, this is the course for you.The AC/DC Modeling course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the AC/DC Module, an add-on to COMSOL Multiphysics that is appropriate for modeling static, transient, and sinusoidally time-varying electromagnetic fields. During this 4-day course, you will learn how the AC/DC Module can be used for modeling resistive, capacitive, and inductive devices, as well as magnets, forces, and motion.

Training Course Objective

By the end of the training course, you will know how to build models for electrostatic, magnetostatic, and low-frequency AC applications. You will also be able to extract lumped electrical parameters from the model and augment these full-fidelity models by connecting them to a simple electrical circuit network model. This course allows current and potential users of COMSOL Multiphysics and the AC/DC Module to quickly get acquainted with the software's modeling capabilities.


Day 1

11 a.m.–5 p.m. In the first session, we will introduce you to the AC/DC Module. We will discuss different electromagnetic devices and the physics interfaces best suited for modeling them.

In addition, we will cover:

  • Analysis types
  • Modeling magnets
  • Modeling coils
  • Material models

Day 2

11 a.m.–5 p.m. Building onto the previous day, we will discuss meshing considerations from the perspective of electromagnetic phenomena. In addition, you will learn about the use of symmetry and different ways to model high-aspect-ratio structures. We will also cover how to couple external electric circuits with FEM models.

Topics include:

  • Open boundary problems: infinite element domains and BEM
  • Electric Circuit interface: circuit elements, sources, and couplings

Day 3

11 a.m.–5 p.m. On this day of the course, you will receive an introduction to the Rotating Machinery Magnetic (RMM) interface. We will cover how to model different aspects of rotating machines, such as the coils, magnets, and rotating motion. Force and torque computation will be discussed extensively.

Topics include:

  • Geometry finalization
  • Use of sector symmetry
  • Modeling motion: the Moving Mesh feature
  • Force and torque calculation

Day 4

11 a.m.–5 p.m. This session covers how to incorporate multiphysics aspects such as heat transfer, translation, and structural mechanics in your device simulations. We will take a look at modeling heating, different loss models, and boundary conditions for cooling. The structural coupling of electromagnetic devices will be briefly discussed.

We will go over:

  • Loss models: Steinmetz and Bertotti
  • Specialized study types to efficiently handle electromagnetic heating
  • Coupling electromagnetics with structural mechanics

Suggested Background

The AC/DC Modeling course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of electrical engineering. We strongly recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the Introduction to COMSOL Multiphysics® training course prior to attending this class.
