Optical waveguides are pivotal in many existing and developing photonic and optical systems due to their ability to guide light in the optical range in a desired manner. Some applications optical waveguides are useful in include optical fibers, which are a cornerstone of modern communication technologies, and photonic circuits, which are of great interest due to their possible influence on the future of computing. Detailed understanding of these systems' behaviors and how the path of light can be manipulated through them often requires designers to consider other physical effects. For this reason, it is beneficial to model such systems with the COMSOL® software, which offers a wide range of multiphysics modeling functionality.

In this webinar, we will introduce the key COMSOL product for modeling optical waveguides: the Wave Optics Module, which is an add-on to COMSOL Multiphysics®. This module can be used to perform multiscale modeling of waveguides and extract their propagation characteristics. Extra complexity can also be added to models in order to account for more realistic behavior or external influences, such as structural effects or electro-optic modulation.

The webinar will highlight these features in the module and include a demonstration of the modeling workflow, using a waveguide simulation as example.
