Modeling what happens under a microscope

A group from Mississippi State University and Oak Ridge National Lab investigated the growth of dendrites using two different models. M. A. Zaeem, H. Yin, and S. D. Felicelli compared both a Cellular Automaton Model and a Phase-Field Model, together with a Finite-Element Model, to model dendritic growth in an aluminum and magnesium alloy. This won them one of the Best Poster awards, as judged by two of the members of the Program Committee.

The ability for users to incorporate their own PDEs directly into the COMSOL Multiphysics allowed them to easily compare these two established models. They were then able to compare them both favorably to the Lipton-Glicksman- Kurz analytical model.

In fact, being able to manipulate the equations in COMSOL Multiphysics was a hot topic at the conference. The Equation Based Modeling Minicourse was very popular with almost 100 attendees showing up on the Saturday for it. The minicourse showed users how to construct their own linear or nonlinear PDE systems and how to add ordinary differential equations (ODEs) or even integral equations to their models.

It will certainly be on the agenda for the next conference.
