Application Gallery

Molecular Flow Through an S-Bend

This model computes the transmission probability through an s-bend geometry using both the angular coefficient method available in the Free Molecular Flow interface and a Monte Carlo method using the Mathematical Particle Tracing interface. The computed transmission probability by the two methods is in excellent agreement with less than a 1% difference. This model requires the Particle Tracing ...

Monolithic Reactor

This model simulates the catalytic abatement of a volatile organic compound (VOC), in this case a contaminant in a waste gas. An analytical expression describes the velocity profile in the free channel, while reaction occurs in the washcoat that makes up the tubular shape of the free channel. For simple geometries, the reactor can be described by a 2D model using time as the axial direction ...

Crevice Corrosion of Iron in an Acetic Acid/Sodium Acetate Solution

Mass transport limitations within thin crevices can often result in the local electrochemistry to differ significantly between the crevice opening (mouth) and end (tip), and as a result of the differences in local chemistry, corrosion may occur. This example models crevice corrosion of iron in an acetic acid/sodium acetate solution. The model reproduces the results of Walton.

Journal Bearing with Cavitation

A journal bearing is composed of an outer cylinder (bearing) wrapped around an inner rotating journal (shaft), with a lubricant separating the two. Under certain operating conditions, cavitation can occur between the bearing and the journal, leading to component damage and failure. Knowing the rate of cavitation is helpful when determining the maximum applied load. Cavitation occurs when the ...

Variations in Density in Porous Media Flow

This example studies the steady flow of an ideal gas in porous media, where variations in gas density are taken into account through Equation-based Modeling. Darcy’s law describes the velocity vector in the porous structure and the conservation of mass is accounted for by the ideal gas law. The studied system is a packed bed reactor of the type used for example in small scale reforming ...

Bessel Panel

The Bessel panel is a way to arrange a number of loudspeakers so that the angular sound distribution resembles that of a single speaker. This model combines five Bessel panels in the same pattern to approximate a purely radial sound field. The speakers are driven with different signals, some of them in counter-phase. This results in an approximately homogeneous polar far-field ...

Estimating Thermal Dispersion in a Packed Bed

Thermal dispersion in a porous medium results from the combined effects of heat conduction in the fluid and solid phases, and from convective transport in the fluid. In chemical process engineering, the modeling of thermal dispersion is of central importance as the temperature distribution in a catalyst bed controls not only chemical conversion but also the catalyst life-time. In this model ...

Thermal Bridges in Building Construction - 2D Composite Structure

This example studies heat transfer in a composite two-dimensional structure. Four materials with distinct thermal conductivities k compose the structure. The top and bottom boundaries are facing environments respectively at 0°C and 20°C. The temperature distribution and the heat flux through the structure are compared with published data. This example corresponds to the case 2 described in ...

Ammonia Synthesis PFR

This example demonstrate the modeling of a plug flow reactor for the synthesis of ammonia in the Haber-Weiss process. The catalytic reactor in this process operates under non-isothermal conditions, where temperature and pressure varies substantially along the length of the reactor, in addition to the variation in composition.

Reactive Muffler

This is a benchmarking model to compare the abilities of COMSOL to an analytical solution. The model examines the sound-transmission properties of an idealized reactive muffler with infinitely long inlet and outlet pipes and one expansion chamber. The infinitely long inlet and outlets are simulated through a reflection-free source at the inlet pipe and a reflection-free end of the outlet pipe, ...
