Problem Description

Can COMSOL Multiphysics import meshes, topological data, and images?

Importing Meshes

Mimics and ScanIP can export volumetric meshes on COMSOL's own mesh format created from 3D scans, that can be directly imported into a Mesh sequence. ( Mimics and ScanIP ). For more information about the COMSOL Multiphysics mesh format, either search the Help (press F1 in COMSOL Multiphysics), or open the electronic Documentation (press Ctrl F1 in COMSOL Multiphysics) and then go to the COMSOL Multiphysics Reference Manual> the COMSOL Modeling Environment > The COMSOL Desktop > About the COMSOL Model File Formats. Because the images are converted directly into a mesh and not into a geometry object, as in the other methods below, it is advisable to fine-tune the geometry/mesh within partnering software before the import is done to COMSOL. Other aspects of mesh import and creating geometries form meshes is discussed in this blog post.

Topological Data, GIS, Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and Images

  • Creating irregular shaped geometries based on elevation data is covered in this blog post.

  • Interpolating material data, for example based on information in images, is discussed here.
