Light interacts with tissue at a microscopic scale, interacting with various constituents such as hemoglobin, collagen, lipids, and water.

In this webinar, Dr. Uttam Pal will discuss how light interacts with single molecules, diatomic molecules, and complex molecules such as hemoglobin. You will learn about different theories of light–tissue interaction including the Beer–Lambert law, radiative transfer, and light diffusion. Dr. Pal will cover how one can broadly use the bulk optical properties such as the absorption coefficient and scattering coefficient to estimate the light propagation through tissue. He will also discuss how to design and optimize the positioning of the source and detector based on the requirements of the medical application.

Dr. Uttam Pal

Dr. Uttam Pal is an assistant professor in the department of electronics and communications at IIITDM Kancheepuram, Chennai. He obtained his PhD in 2021 from the department of electronic systems engineering at IISc, Bangalore, where he worked on the design and development of novel multimodal cancer diagnosis systems using optical, thermal, and acoustic modalities; he completed his M.Tech in 2013 in the electrical engineering department at IIT Bombay, where he specialized in computational electromagnetics; and he completed his BE at the A.D. Patel Institute of Technology (Sardar Patel University) in 2008.

Pal has more than eight years of industry experience, working as the team lead of high-frequency electromagnetics simulation at COMSOL, as a patent research engineer at Evalueserve, and as a technology analyst at the opto-semiconductor startup De Core Science and Technologies. His research interest lies in developing novel optical tools for intraoperative cancer margin assessment and diagnosis of disease (oral, cervical, and breast cancer).
