Keynote: Multiphysics Modeling in AR & VR Innovation

Meta is working to advance the optical and display technologies for its augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, a process that requires extensive research and innovation — and multiphysics modeling plays an important role in this process.

In this keynote talk from the COMSOL Conference 2023 Munich, Dr. Nagi Elabbasi of the Reality Labs Research division of Meta discusses the use of multiphysics modeling in developing and testing novel solutions in AR and VR. Elabbasi opens the talk with an introduction to the Optics and Display Research group, a division of Reality Labs Research, and their mission regarding Meta's AR and VR products. From there, he details two recent projects where multiphysics simulation was instrumental. This includes Meta's work on variable accommodation in AR and VR devices as well as the design and optimization of fluidic gratings for beam steering. Elabbasi concludes the talk by briefly covering other multiphysics-supported AR and VR innovations, such as proof-of-concept models for ultrasonic gaze estimation.

Dr. Nagi Elabbasi holds a PhD from the University of Toronto and is a multiphysics simulation technical lead manager at Reality Labs Research, a division of Meta.
