Electrostatically Actuated Cantilever

The elastic cantilever beam is one of the elementary structures used in MEMS designs. This model shows the bending of a cantilever beam under an applied electrostatic load. The model solves the deformation of the beam under an applied voltage.

Pull-in Voltage for a Biased Resonator-3D

An electrostatically actuated MEMS resonator is simulated in the time and frequency domains. The device is driven by an AC + DC bias voltage applied across a parallel plate capacitor. The dependence of the resonant frequency on DC bias is assessed, and frequency domain and transient analyses are performed to investigate the device performance.

Micropump Mechanism

Micropumps are key components of microfluidic systems with applications ranging from biological fluid handling to microelectronic cooling. This model simulates the mechanism of a valveless micropump, that is designed to be effective at low Reynolds numbers, overcoming hydrodynamic reversibility. Valveless pumps are often preferred in microfludic systems because they minimize the risk of ...

Surface Micromachined Accelerometer

This model shows how to simulate a capacitively actuated surface micromachined accelerometer, using the Electromechanics Interface. It is based on a case study from the book Microsystem Design by Stephen D. Senturia (Kluwer Academic Publishers, 5th Edition, 2003, pages 513-525).

Thermal Initial Stresses in a Layered Plate

The thermal stress in a layered plate is studied in this example. A plate consisting of two layers, a coating and a substrate layer is stress and strain free at 800 degrees C. The temperature of the plate is reduced to 150 degrees C and thermal stresses are induced. A third layer, the carrier layer, is added and the thermal stresses in the coating and a substrate layer are added as an initial ...

Thickness Shear Mode Quartz Oscillator

AT cut quartz crystals are widely employed in a range of applications, from oscillators to microbalances. One of the important properties of the AT cut is that the resonant frequency of the crystal is temperature independent to first order. This is desirable in both mass sensing and timing applications. AT cut crystals vibrate in the thickness shear mode—an applied voltage across the faces of ...

Thin-Film BAW Composite Resonator

Bulk Acoustic Wave (BAW) resonators can be used as narrow band filters in radio-frequency applications. The chief advantage compared with traditional ceramic electromagnetic resonators is that BAW resonators, thanks to the acoustic wavelength being much smaller than the electromagnetic wavelength, can be made much smaller. In addition to the desired bulk acoustic mode, the resonator structure ...

Piezoceramic Tube

This example involves a static 2D axisymmetric analysis of a piezoelectric actuator using the Piezoelectric Devices physics interface. It models a radially polarized piezoelectric tube, as described by S. Peelamedu and co-authors. An application area where radially polarized tubes are employed is in nozzles for fluid control in inkjet printers.

Thermal Expansion in a MEMS Device

This model analyzes the thermal expansion in a MEMS device, such as a microgyroscope, where thermal expansion should be minimized. The device is made from the copper-beryllium alloy UNS C17500 and uses temperature-dependent material properties from the Material Library. The purpose of this model is to exemplify the use of the Material Library in COMSOL Multiphysics. This library contains more ...

Microresistor Beam

This example illustrates the ability to couple thermal, electrical, and structural analysis in one model. This particular application moves a beam by passing a current through it; the current generates heat, and the temperature increase leads to displacement through thermal expansion. The model estimates how much current and increase in temperature are necessary to displace the beam. Although ...
