Extrude cut

[I wanted to know extrude cut for 3D geometry. I made a 3D object say block. On the top surface I define an work plane. On that work plane let us draw a closed geometry. Now I want to make an extrude cut of that geometry within that block to make material extruded out of that geometry. Now if I make extrude in reverse direction i.e. inside the block and then take difference graphics do not show that the matrial was cut out of the block. Can you kindly advise?]
