Mass and Heat Transport in an Oxygen Mask

When designing oxygen masks for delivering respiratory support to patients via BiPAP and CPAP, multiphysics modeling helps visualize the flow pattern inside the mask for a given design. From there, it is possible to estimate oxygen consumption, carbon dioxide accumulation, and temperature in the mask to create a design that conserves oxygen by avoiding CO2 buildup without completely flushing the mask with each breath cycle.

This example model features a transient model to account for a complete respiratory cycle and estimates the flow field, composition, and temperature in the mask.
