Modeling Overview: Rotordynamics

The Rotordynamics Module is an add-on product to the Structural Mechanics Module that expands the functionality for simulating rotordynamics in COMSOL Multiphysics®. In this previously held webinar, you will get a comprehensive look at this module and its capabilities.

The webinar begins with an overview of COMSOL Multiphysics® and then dives into a detailed introduction to the Rotordynamics Module where we go over all of the complex phenomena that can be involved in simulating rotordynamics. From there, we discuss the specialized features and capabilities for studying vibrations in rotating components. This includes predefined physics interfaces, various analysis capabilities, and specialized postprocessing tools as well as plot types.

Some case studies in which the use of this functionality are highlighted are listed below:

  • Stability analysis of a turbocharger
  • Transient analysis of a turbocharger
  • Misalignment effect in a radial rotor bearing

Thereafter, we outline the multiphysics interfaces and couplings available through the Rotordynamics Module. The webinar concludes with a demonstration of modeling a beam rotor supported by hydrodynamic bearings at both ends, with one of the bearings being misaligned.

This webinar is relevant to recently released versions of COMSOL Multiphysics®. You may notice small differences between versions. You can learn more about the Rotordynamics Module here.
