COMSOL® SOFTWARE VERSION 6.4 UPDATE 1

Update 1 to the COMSOL® software version 6.4 update 1 (build 6.4.0.343) provides performance and stability improvements to COMSOL Multiphysics®, COMSOL Server™, COMSOL Client for use with COMSOL Server™, and Model Manager server.

The update applies to COMSOL® software version 6.4 (builds 6.4.0.293).

If you have version 6.4 and a valid license with a current subscription, you can apply update 1 by performing a full installation of version 6.4 from the Product Download page, which will include all updates.

Terms and Conditions

This update is governed by the COMSOL Software License Agreement that is displayed upon installation of COMSOL Multiphysics® or by the terms and conditions of any other agreement COMSOL may have with your organization. For the latest version of the COMSOL Software License Agreement, including any provisions applicable to this update, see the License Agreements page. By downloading and using this update, you agree to use this update in accordance with the current version of the COMSOL Software License Agreement or with the terms and conditions of any other agreement we may have with your organization.

Note: Updates 1 to version 6.4 of the COMSOL® software does not introduce any changes to the COMSOL Software License Agreement.

How to Apply the Software Update

Before proceeding with your installation, make sure that you close and exit any running COMSOL® processes and any software you have running that correlates to a LiveLink™ product you would like to update (Excel®, MATLAB®, Simulink®, or a CAD software program).

Updating COMSOL Multiphysics®

The easiest way to install the update for COMSOL Multiphysics® is to start the program and then select Check for Product Updates. If using the Windows® operating system, this option is located in the File menu under Help. If using the Linux® operating system or macOS, this option is located in the Help menu.

For more information on how to install the update and for offline installation instructions, see the Additional Instructions tab below.

To check that the update installation was successful, first start the COMSOL Multiphysics® software and then select the About COMSOL Multiphysics menu option. If using the Windows® operating system, this option is located in the File menu under Help. If using the Linux® operating system or macOS, this option is located in the Help menu. The listed version should be COMSOL Multiphysics® 6.4 (build 6.4.0.343).

Updating COMSOL Server™

To update COMSOL Server™ for the Windows® operating system, run the Update program from the COMSOL Launchers folder in the Start menu. Note that the COMSOL Server™ service process needs to be stopped before applying the update.

For more information on how to install the update, installing on other operating systems, and offline installation, see the Additional Instructions tab below.

To check that the installation was successful, first make sure that COMSOL Server™ is running; then, navigate to COMSOL Server™ in a web browser and follow the About COMSOL Server™ link in the lower-right corner. The new version should be COMSOL Server™ 6.4 (build 6.4.0.343).

Updating COMSOL Client for Use with COMSOL Server™

To update COMSOL Client for the Windows® operating system, download the new version from Client Download and install. The previous 6.4 installation will be overwritten. In order to run properly, your installation of COMSOL Client must have the same version number as the COMSOL Server™ installation that you connect to.

Updating the Model Manager Server

To update Model Manager server for the Windows® operating system, run the Update program from the COMSOL Launchers folder in the Start menu. Note that the Model Manager server process needs to be stopped before applying the update.

For information on how to install the update, see the Additional Instructions tab below.

To check that the installation was successful, first make sure that Model Manager server is running; then, navigate to the Model Manager server in a web browser and follow the About link at the bottom of the page. The new version should be COMSOL Model Manager server 6.4 (Build: 6.4.0.343).

The following instructions apply only if you are not using the method based on the Check for Product Updates menu item, as described above.

Updating COMSOL Multiphysics®

Check the Version Number

  1. Start COMSOL Multiphysics®.
  2. Open the About COMSOL Multiphysics dialog box. If using the Windows® operating system, the dialog box can be found in the File menu under Help. If using either the Linux® operating system or macOS, the dialog box can be found under the Help menu.
  3. Check that the version number is 6.4 (build 6.4.0.293). This corresponds to the version that has not yet been updated.

Install the Update

Before you proceed with the installation, make sure to exit any running COMSOL Multiphysics® processes or any software you have running that correlates to a LiveLink™ product you would like to update (Excel®, PowerPoint®, MATLAB®, or a CAD software).

  1. Start the COMSOL® software update installer:
    • Windows® operating systems: Run the Update program from the COMSOL Launchers folder in the Start menu, or directly from the COMSOL 6.4 installation folder. The COMSOL Launchers folder can be found in the installation folder, for example, C:\Program Files\COMSOL\COMSOL64\Multiphysics\COMSOL Launchers.
    • Linux® operating systems: Run the update script from the COMSOL 6.4 installation directory, for example, /usr/local/comsol64/multiphysics.
    • macOS: Run the COMSOL Update application from the COMSOL 6.4 installation directory, for example, /Applications/COMSOL64/Multiphysics.
  2. The next step will be taken in the installer program\'s Options page and depends on whether or not you have a live internet connection or if you plan to download the update file for offline installation:
    • If you have an internet connection: Keep the Direct download setting.
    • If you have an internet connection via a proxy server: Select Download via proxy server and enter your proxy configuration settings.
    • If you do not have an internet connection on the target computer or if you want to apply the update several times on multiple computers: Download the following file to a folder on your computer

      In the installer program, select Manual download and click Browse. Navigate to the downloaded file and click Open.
  3. Click Next to get to the Release Notes page for reviewing the update details.
  4. Click Next to get to the Install page and review the software components affected by the update.
  5. In the Install page, click Install to start the installation of the update.

  • In macOS: Type <installation directory>/bin/comsol server to start COMSOL Server™.

  2. In Linux®: If you configured Model Manager server using the systemd service, stop it by typing systemctl stop comsolmodelmanagerserver64; otherwise, kill the Model Manager server process.
  3. In macOS: Kill the Model Manager server process.

  • In macOS: Type <installation directory>/bin/comsol modelmanagerserver to start Model Manager server.

All COMSOL® software products undergo stability improvements that are introduced as updates. The following list contains the most important improvements in COMSOL® version 6.4 update 1.

COMSOL Multiphysics®

  • Solvers and GPU Acceleration
    • COMSOL Multiphysics® version 6.4 introduced GPU acceleration with the NVIDIA CUDA® direct sparse solver (cuDSS) for the first time. With version 6.4 update 1, the NVIDIA CUDA® Toolkit has been upgraded to version 12.9.1 to access full performance on NVIDIA Blackwell® GPUs, resulting in significantly improved GPU performance on the latest Blackwell® generation.
    • When using NVIDIA cuDSS, performance has been improved for the CPU-based parts of matrix factorization.
    • When running on a computer with several graphics cards and at least one NVIDIA GPU, an NVIDIA GPU is selected for rendering.
    • Fixed an issue that could prevent COMSOL Desktop® from starting on Windows® when an incompatible version of an OpenMP library was installed in the Windows System32 directory
    • Cluster scalability has been improved.
    • The solver performance issues that arose in some cases when Plot while solving was enabled and a Results Parameters node was present have been fixed.
    • The storage format for Changes from Default Settings in solver features has been changed. Changes recorded in previous versions cannot be reverted by Undo Changes. Previously changed properties remain listed with unknown default values in the tables in the Changes from Default Settings section of the settings.
    • The solver sequence now shows the storage format that will be used when running on a cluster.
  • The Chatbot Window
    • The OpenAI Responses API is now used when the Chatbot window is configured for OpenAI™ or Azure® OpenAI™.
    • Updated the OpenAI Chatbot provider backend

    • Activating the checkboxes (separately or together) modifies the formulation for the consistent stabilization terms of the components of the Reynolds stress tensor equation and the turbulent dissipation rate or specific dissipation equation. Thus, stability of the turbulence equations of an RSM is not lost at small time steps. This update can be crucial in cases when flow is accompanied by fast and stable processes, which causes very small time steps, or when starting time-dependent studies, which also can result in very small time steps during initial iterations.
  • A rotation-curvature correction in k-based RANS models now allows combining rotating domains with stationary domains in Frozen Rotor studies.
