does anybody know how to add points to an imported geometry and mesh without disturbing the mesh (the geometry is imported from gmsh)?

If you want to do this for the purpose of plotting various values during post-processing, you can add "cut points" at that stage. You can do this in 2D or 3D without re-meshing and without recomputing the finite-element solution(s). You'll get interpolated values at the inserted points. However, if you want to change the geometry in a manner that will/could change the solution, then you will need to re-mesh.
