Meshing issues - small gaps

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hi,

I am trying to mesh some coils that have small gaps between them (≈0.5mm). In reality this space will be filled with an insulator. I keep getting the following warnings with my mesh:

"Faces adjacent to a thin region" "Domain has a region that is much thinner than the specified minimum element size"

In understand its because of these gaps but not sure of the best approach to fix this issue. Any help would be appreciated.

FYI This is my first COMSOL project and I am self taught

Gerard,

if you specify 'normal' size instead of 'coarse' the warning disappears. It will still be a low quality mesh in the gap. In such cases you should set up a user defined mesh. One option would be to start with a boundary mesh on the faces adjacent to the gap. Element size should there be smaller than the gap size. The rest can then be meshed with free tetrahedra. Of course there are many more options to improve the mesh.

Cheers Edgar
