interface thickness in level set method

Dear friends,
As I know the interface thickness in level set method depends on the parameter which the default value for this parameter is " tpf.hmax/2 ". when I want to reduce the interface thickness by changing this parameter , I have convergence problems and on the other hand by keeping the default value you have to use the fine mesh everywhere which results in memory problems.
i am using version v4.2 but even by using adapting meshing, the interface thickness depends on the maximum element size yet.
what should i do ??
best
