Modeling Structural Mechanics in COMSOL Multiphysics® (2 Days)

March 30–31, 2026 Zoetermeer 9:00

Back to Events Calendar

This course will provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the Structural Mechanics Module, an add-on to the COMSOL Multiphysics® simulation platform that offers specialized functionality for modeling a wide range of structural phenomena.

During this 2-day course, you will get an introduction to using various physics interfaces, nonlinear material models, and multiphysics couplings involving physics such as heat transfer and acoustics. You will get a look at features for modeling solid mechanics, shells, beams, and membranes, as well as for performing static and dynamic analyses and structural contact modeling. In addition, you will learn best modeling practices and useful convergence techniques for specific modeling scenarios.

Training Course Objective

The goal of this course is to immerse you in the COMSOL Multiphysics® modeling workflow, help you feel comfortable working with the Structural Mechanics Module, and show you how to efficiently run mechanical analyses. To teach this course, we will use a combination of hands-on training and practical explanations.

Schedule

Day 1, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Please plan to check in between 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

The first day will begin with an overview of the Structural Mechanics Module. We will give an overview of the user interface (UI), covering meshing, solvers, and results visualization. The following topics will be covered:

  • Introduction to structural analysis
  • Boundary conditions and simplified modeling techniques, such as adding lumped parameters (added mass, spring foundation, etc.)
  • Use of symmetry and plane-stress and plane-strain problems
  • Types of elements in COMSOL Multiphysics®, such as solids, shells, plates, membranes, beams, trusses, and wires
  • Mixing element types (beam connection, shell connection, etc.)
  • Different study types: stationary, time dependent, frequency-domain analysis (eigenfrequency, frequency, modal, and prestressed) *Multiphysics couplings

Day 2, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Please plan to check in between 8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.

The second day will build upon the training from the first day. We will look at nonlinearity in structural analysis and advanced modeling techniques. The following topics will be covered:

  • Sources of nonlinearity
  • Nonlinear material models (hyperelasticity, plasticity, etc.)
  • Contact analysis (implicit and explicit)
  • Solver settings and improving the convergence of nonlinear problems
  • Advanced modeling techniques (such as load cases, homogenization, bolt analysis, stress linearization, crack modeling, weld evaluation, and submodeling)

Some or all of the topics listed above will be considered according to the length of the course and the interests of the participants.

Please note: we don't provide a laptop, please bring your own laptop, as well as a mouse. We will provide a free two-week trial version of COMSOL Multiphysics® to install on your laptop. Please make sure it is installed before the training starts.
