The design of ESS-Bilbao RFQ (RadioFrequency Quadrupole) linear accelerator cavity using COMSOL Multiphysics is presented. The work includes geometry definition, electrostatics, electromagnetic and thermomechanical coupled simulations. The main part of the work corresponds to the electromagnetic design. Geometry construction and meshing is very challenging, involving large models (3 m long) with very relevant fine details (microns). Electrostatics simulations are used for certain tasks, but RF eigenfrequency simulations are the most used. Thermo-mechanical and coupled EM-TM-EM simulations are also used for the cooling and tuning design of a device as complex as an RFQ. After several years of development, the design process for this device in ESS-Bilbao has finished successfully and fabrication has been launched.
