Sub-Component Lumping in Acoustics Using the Impedance Boundary Condition

This application illustrates a modeling approach for deriving physically consistent simplified models in the Acoustics Module. The approach consists of converting complex sub-components to an impedance boundary condition and otherwise using simple acoustics throughout the COMSOL model. As a consequence, significant computational speed-up can be achieved. The example treated here consists of a ...

Linear Magnetic Gear

In this model, a linear magnetic gear system with a gear ratio of 11:4 is modeled. The liner magnetic gear is assumed to be infinitely long with the modular structure that is repeating on either side. Only a single modular section is modeled by using the customized linear periodic boundary condition. Both the low speed and the high speed armatures (rotors) consist of permanent magnets and back ...

Shape Optimization of a Capacitor Design

This example exemplifies how to optimize the design of a capacitor through optimization. A more detailed description of the phenomenon and the modeling process can be seen in the blog post "[Changing the Dimensions of a Model Using Shape Optimization](https://www.comsol.com/blogs/changing-the-dimensions-of-a-model-using-shape-optimization/)".

Design Sensitivities in a COMSOL Model

This example exemplifies how to compute the design sensitivities of your COMSOL Multiphysics® model. A more detailed description of the modeling process can be seen in the blog post "[Computing Design Sensitivities in COMSOL Multiphysics](https://www.comsol.com/blogs/computing-design-sensitivities-in-comsol-multiphysics/)".

Failure Prediction in a Layered Shell

Laminated shells made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CRFP) are common in a large variety of applications due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. The widespread attention to the laminated shells is due to their diverse applications in aerospace, marine, automotive, and various manufacturing industries. It is necessary to evaluate the structural integrity of a laminated shell for a set ...

Chemical Reactions and Soot Build-Up in a Diesel Filter

In this tutorial, a filter system for a diesel engine is modeled, including where a soot layer builds up and is oxidized. The build-up of the layer is held in check by both catalytic and non-catalytic reactions, where carbon is oxidized to carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, which in turn passes through the membrane. A filter system's efficiency and durability is closely related to the manner ...

Optimizing Band Dispersion in an Electroosmotic Flow Through a Curved Microchannel

This model studies the dispersion of neutral species band through curved microchannel in an Electroosmotic flow (EOF) . Using Optimization module, geometric optimization is carried out to minimize the curve-induced dispersion. The central idea is to parametrically represent the geometry by Bézier curves and these geometric parameters are further treated as optimization parameters in the ...

Spring Loaded Centrifugal Governor

A centrifugal governor is used to control the speed of rotating machinery. One of the most common applications is in controlling the RPM of an engine by regulating the fuel supply. This model illustrates the functioning of a spring loaded centrifugal governor. The dynamics of the governor are analyzed under the influence of a centrifugal force, spring force, and damping force. The sleeve ...

Thermal Impact of a Borehole Heat Exchanger Array

This model shows how to compute an array of borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) for shallow geothermal energy production. The BHEs are simplified as cylindrical heat sinks with a uniform heat extraction rate. The array is embedded into a layered subsurface model with groundwater flow in one of the layers. For more details, please see the blog post "[Modeling Geothermal Processes with COMSOL ...

Characteristic Parameters of a Coaxial Cable

Electrical cables, also called transmission lines, are used everywhere in the modern world to transmit both power and data. These cables carry electromagnetic energy, but instead of dealing with the full complexity of the electromagnetic fields, they are more commonly classified according to parameters such as capacitance, inductance, and impedance. In this model of a coaxial cable, we ...
