If you want to learn how to use COMSOL Multiphysics® for RF, microwave, and photonics simulations, this is the course for you. During this 2-day training course, you will develop a strong foundation for your future electromagnetic wave modeling work. We start with the essential modeling steps common to all electromagnetic wave analyses and then focus on specific techniques relevant to modeling resonant structures, antennas, waveguides, filters, periodic structures such as metamaterials, and scatterers in background fields.

To teach this course, we use a combination of guided hands-on training, theoretical and practical lecture, and self-guided hands-on training. The goal is to immerse you in all of the main aspects of using COMSOL Multiphysics®, the RF Module, and the Wave Optics Module so that you feel comfortable working with the COMSOL® software. You will leave the course feeling confident that you are correctly solving your electromagnetic wave problems with COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Day 1, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

The course begins with a guided introduction to electromagnetic wave modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics® using the Electromagnetic Waves, Frequency Domain interface in the RF and Wave Optics modules. Topics covered on the first day include:

  • Cavities and resonant structures
  • Antennas and radiating devices
  • Computing modes of transmission lines
  • Passive devices: couplers and filters
  • Scattering of electromagnetic fields and radar cross sections
  • Electromagnetic heating and multiphysics

Day 2, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

The second day builds upon the training from the previous day and addresses the Electromagnetic Waves, Beam Envelopes interface that is unique to the Wave Optics Module, as well as the Electromagnetic Waves, Transient and Electromagnetic Waves, Time Explicit interfaces. Modeling of periodic structures will also be addressed. We will cover:

  • The beam envelope method for photonic device modeling
  • Modeling of periodic structures: gratings, polarizers, and metamaterials
  • Nonlinear material response with the transient formulation
  • Wideband analysis with the time-explicit formulation

Suggested Background

This course assumes some familiarity with the basic concepts of electrical engineering. We recommend that those new to COMSOL Multiphysics® take the COMSOL Multiphysics® Intensive course prior to attending this class.
