COMSOL Day: Version 6.0

See what is possible with multiphysics simulation

COMSOL Multiphysics® version 6.0 is here! Featuring the Model Manager, this latest version of COMSOL Multiphysics® will increase your modeling efficiency by streamlining the production of your simulations through better organization and collaboration. This release will also bring the new Uncertainty Quantification Module for using probabilistic and statistical methods to take into account real-world variability of simulation parameters.

As with every release of COMSOL Multiphysics®, there is a wealth of improvements and new features throughout the product lines. Highlights include:

  • Memory use and speedup improvement
  • Large eddy simulation (LES) for turbulent flow has been added to the CFD Module and, when combined with the Acoustics Module, enables flow-induced noise.
  • Improved handling of printed circuit boards (PCBs) for the AC/DC Module and RF Module
  • Meshing and graphics improvements
  • And much more!

COMSOL Multiphysics® version 6.0 introduces a paradigm shift in COMSOL’s modeling capabilities as it increases its footprint on the world of engineering design and development. A major new platform feature and new product lead the highlights of this new version. This session offers a brief introduction to the rest of the day's sessions, which will go into more detail about many of the improvements and new features, including:

  • A new platform feature, the Model Manager, for organizing and collaborating on modeling projects
  • The Uncertainty Quantification Module for sensitivity analyses, uncertainty propagation, and reliability analyses
  • A plethora of significant updates to COMSOL Multiphysics® and its add-on products

Chemical & Electrochemical Engineering

This session will cover news in the Chemical Reaction Engineering, Electrochemistry, Electrodeposition, Corrosion, Battery Design, and Fuel Cell & Electrolyzer modules.

Highlights include:

  • New and improved features for porous reactor modeling in the Chemical Species Transport interfaces
  • Modeling species adsorption and desorption on electrode surfaces
  • The new Cathodic Protection interface for modeling corrosion protection
  • New intercalation strain functionality for battery electrode modeling
  • Electroosmotic water drag and membrane crossover in fuel cells and electrolyzers
Structural Mechanics

COMSOL continues to improve capabilities within structural mechanics and its suite of add-on and associated products, including:

  • New built-in connections for disjoint shells coming from imported CAD assemblies
  • 10x faster solving of creep analysis as well as significant speedups for many other nonlinear material models
  • Increased robustness by numerically stabilized plasticity formulations
  • Fatigue evaluation for random vibration
  • Component mode synthesis (CMS) reduced-order models for both static and dynamic substructuring

Parallel Session

In this session, we will summarize improvements and new features for modeling low- and high-frequency electromagnetics, as well as wave and ray optics. Topics include:

  • New ways to model frequency-dependent parasitic inductance computations for printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  • A new magnetomechanics analysis user interface
  • Introduction of a hybrid boundary-element–finite-element method (BEM–FEM) for electromagnetic waves
  • The inclusion of material libraries from major glass manufacturers
Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer

In this session, we will summarize the many improvements for modeling more complex fluid flow and heat transfer applications much faster, including:

  • 10x speedup and computational resource improvement when modeling surface-to-surface radiation
  • A new user interface for simulating rotating machinery with high Mach number flow
  • The consideration of automatic wall treatment and thermal wall functions in large eddy simulations (LES)
  • The introduction of new viscoelastic and inelastic fluid models

Accessible directly from the COMSOL Multiphysics® user interface, the Model Manager simplifies and streamlines modeling and simulation work by providing a tool for simulation data management, which includes the following capabilities:

  • Providing centralized workspaces to organize project work efficiently with colleagues and within teams and organizations, such as:
    • Storage of other input data files and specs and postprocessing files within the same workspace
    • Advanced search functionality of data, labels, features, and parameters within models, apps, and other files
  • Allowing updates to the latest version of a model and other data files through version control, which also includes:
    • Efficient storage of data, keeping only changes made to previous versions
    • Easy creation of sandboxes and new version branches
    • Tracking change functionality and tools comparing different versions
    • Augmentation of collaboration with colleagues and team members on the same model, app, and input files
  • A liberal licensing scheme to allow model, app, and project file access within and without organizations and across geographical borders

In this session, we will introduce new, faster, and more efficient solvers for combining elastic and piezoelectric waves in the time domain. This session will also cover other new features within acoustics, such as:

  • Physics-controlled meshing for modeling pressure acoustics
  • New, fast options for modeling high-frequency pressure acoustics based on asymptotic scattering and the Kirchhoff–Helmholtz integral
  • A new user interface for modeling flow-induced noise (when used with large eddy simulation from the CFD Module)

Parallel Session

This session will show some of COMSOL’s improved solver and optimization implementations, including:

  • New organization of optimization features
  • New user interfaces for parameter estimation, control variables, and global least-squares analysis
  • A new user interface for scaling, moving, and rotating objects in shape optimization
  • New tools for transient optimization
Geometry & Meshing

The underlying functionality of geometry modeling and meshing has been significantly improved within COMSOL Multiphysics® and its CAD-based add-on products. This session will demonstrate:

  • Organization of geometry operations using group nodes
  • Offset curve and thicken operations in 2D and creation of 2D geometry objects from projections of 3D objects
  • Form unions of imported STL, PLY, and 3MF files
  • Improved detection of interferences

3:45 p.m.

The Uncertainty Quantification Module uses specialized solver studies and postprocessing tools to expand your models and produce more encompassing, accurate, and useful versions of your model. Through applying probabilistic design, this enables you to look at questions such as how manufacturing tolerances affect the intended performance of the final product and how to avoid preventing over- and underdesigns of devices and processes. In this session, we will investigate the new Uncertainty Module’s application to:

  • Screening and sensitivity analyses
  • Uncertainty propagation and reliability analyses
  • Use within any kind of physics simulation, such as structural, chemical, acoustics, fluid flow, and electromagnetics applications

Ed Fontes

Ed Fontes is the chief technology officer at COMSOL. He has been with COMSOL since 1999, and was previously the lead developer for the CFD, heat transfer, and chemical engineering products. He received his PhD in chemical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm.

Kamakshi Jagannathan
Technical Product Manager

Kamakshi Jagannathan works as a product specialist in the electrochemical development team at COMSOL. She received her PhD from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and was a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Leeds, UK. Prior to joining COMSOL in 2012, Kamakshi worked as a senior researcher at General Motors Global R&D, Bangalore, for 5 years.

Prashant Srivastava
Technical Product Manager, Rotordynamics

Prashant Srivastava joined COMSOL in 2012, and currently works as a product developer within the structural mechanics group. He has also contributed to the development of the Multibody Dynamics Module. He received his PhD in aerospace engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where he investigated the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials using molecular dynamics simulation.

Nicolas Huc
Technology Director, Heat Transfer

Nicolas Huc joined COMSOL France in 2004 and is currently the head of their development team. He is also the manager of the Heat Transfer Module. Nicolas studied engineering at ENSIMAG before receiving his PhD in living system modeling from Joseph Fourier University.

Linus Andersson
Technical Support Manager

Linus Andersson is an applications engineer providing technical support within COMSOL and to customers worldwide, specializing in electromagnetic and acoustic simulations. Linus joined COMSOL in 2003, after receiving his MS degree in engineering physics at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, and completing his diploma thesis at CERN.

Mikael Sterner
Technology Manager, User Interface

Mikael Sterner works as a technology manager in the User Interface team at COMSOL in Stockholm, Sweden, where he leads the development of COMSOL Server™ and Model Manager. He received his PhD in microsystem technology from KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Mads J. Herring Jensen
Technology Manager, Acoustics

Mads Herring Jensen joined COMSOL in 2011 and is the technology manager for the acoustics products. Mads has a PhD in computational fluid dynamics from the Technical University of Denmark. Before joining COMSOL, he worked in the hearing aid industry for five years as an acoustic finite element expert.

Kristian Ejlebjærg Jensen
Technology Manager, Optimization

Kristian E. Jensen joined COMSOL in 2018 as the product manager for the Optimization Module. He studied at the Technical University of Denmark, where he worked on topology optimization and differential constitutive equations for viscoelastic flow. He studied the combination of mesh adaptation and topology optimization at Imperial College London.

Hanna Gothäll
Senior Product Specialist, Geometry and Mesh

Hanna Gothäll works at COMSOL as a senior product specialist in geometry and meshing. She has experience working as an applications engineer, specializing in geometry, meshing, CAD import, and LiveLink™ for CAD products. Before joining COMSOL in 2006, she received her MSc degree in engineering physics from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Fanlong Meng
Senior Developer

Fanlong Meng is a senior developer at COMSOL. He has worked with uncertainty quantification and solver and numerical analysis. He graduated with a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he conducted research on numerical partial differential equation solvers and domain decomposition.

Ashwin S. Mecheri
Sales Manager

Ashwin S. Mecheri is currently a sales manager at COMSOL. He received an MS degree in biomedical engineering from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, and held a research position at imec, KU Leuven, Belgium.
