Getting Started with Electro-Thermal-Mechanical Modeling

Using the Solver Algorithms and Addressing Modeling Issues

In Part 4 of a 5-part course on electro-thermal-mechanical modeling in COMSOL Multiphysics®, you will gain an understanding of what the solver is doing through an overview of the solver algorithms. You will also learn how to interpret the information the software is reporting as it computes. If you want to learn more about the convergence of nonlinear, stationary models, we recommend the guide provided in this Knowledge Base entry.

During this lecture, we discuss the limitations of using a stationary assumption for your model, as well as when you should switch to a transient analysis. We then demonstrate performing a transient analysis. We compute the temperature rise within the bond wires of the chip over time. Lastly, we expand our model further by including structural effects. We incorporate  thermal expansion in the model of the chip and discuss some different solution approaches.
