Defining a Mapped Dielectric Distribution of a Metamaterial Lens

This example demonstrates how to set up a spatially varying dielectric distribution, such as might be engineered with a metamaterial. Here, a convex lens shape is defined via a known deformation of a rectangular domain. The dielectric distribution is defined on the undeformed, original rectangular domain and is mapped onto the deformed shape of the lens. Although the lens shape defined here is ...

Second Harmonic Generation of a Gaussian Beam

Laser systems are an important application area in modern electronics. With nonlinear materials it is possible to generate harmonics that are a multiple of the frequency of the laser light. This model shows how a second harmonic generation can be set up as a transient wave simulation, using nonlinear material properties. A YAG (lambda=1.06 microm.) laser beam is focused on a nonlinear ...

Radar Cross Section

This tutorial model demonstrates the use of a background field in an electromagnetic scattering problem. Although this example is a boat hit by a radar, this same technique can be used in any situation where an isolated object meets electromagnetic waves from a distant source. For example, several orders of magnitude smaller, an equally common application is plasmon resonant nanoparticles. ...

Waveguide Adapter

This is a model of an adapter for microwave propagation in the transition between a rectangular and an elliptical waveguide. Such waveguide adapters are designed to keep energy losses due to reflections at a minimum for the operating frequencies. To investigate the characteristics of the adapter, the simulation includes a wave traveling from a rectangular waveguide through the adapter and into an ...

Dielectric Slab Waveguide

A planar dielectric slab waveguide demonstrates the principles behind any kind of dielectric waveguide such as a ridge waveguide or a step index fiber. This model solves for the effective index of a dielectric slab waveguide, as well as the fields, and compares to analytic results.

Step Index Fiber

The transmission speed of optical waveguides is superior to microwave waveguides, because optical devices have a much higher operating frequency than microwaves, enabling a far higher bandwidth. This model is an example of a single step-index waveguide made of silica glass. The inner core is made of pure silica glass with refractive index n1 = 1.4457 and the cladding is doped, with a refractive ...

Modeling of Pyramidal Absorbers for an Anechoic Chamber

In this model, a microwave absorber is constructed from an infinite 2D array of pyramidal lossy structures. Pyramidal absorbers with radiation-absorbent material (RAM) are commonly used in anechoic chambers for electromagnetic wave measurements. Microwave absorption is modeled using a lossy material to imitate the electromagnetic properties of conductive carbon-loaded foam.

Feasibility Study of Microstrip Patch Antenna Array Design

An antenna array is a group of radiating elements. By controlling the phase and magnitude of the input signal assigned to each antenna element and the number of array elements, the radiation pattern can be steered in a desired direction with a preferred level of gain. In this example, a 4 x 2 array of patch antennas is fed from a single feed point, with all elements fed at equal phase and ...

Transient Modeling of a Coaxial Cable

Simulation of Maxwell’s equations in the time domain is useful if the objective of the analysis is to observe a transient phenomenon, to find the time it takes a signal to propagate, or if the materials being modeled are non-linear with respect to the electric or magnetic field strength. This model simulates a pulse propagating down a coaxial transmission line and observes the time it takes for ...

Branch Line Coupler

A Branch Line Coupler (Quadrature 90° Hybrid) is a four-port network device with a 90° phase difference between two coupled ports. The device can be used for a single antenna Transmitter/Receiver system or an I/Q signal splitter/combiner. The objective of this model is to compute the S-parameters and to observe the matching, isolation, and coupling around the operating frequency.
