Ammonia Synthesis PFR

This example demonstrate the modeling of a plug flow reactor for the synthesis of ammonia in the Haber-Weiss process. The catalytic reactor in this process operates under non-isothermal conditions, where temperature and pressure varies substantially along the length of the reactor, in addition to the variation in composition.

A Variety of Analyses of a Steel Component

This example shows a plane stress analysis of a mechanical component. The component is cut from a 4 mm steel plate. The thickness is small compared to the length and breadth in the x-y plane. Due to this, and the fact that the applied loads lie in the x-y plane, the out-of-plane stress can be assumed to be negligible. The plane stress application mode is based on this assumption. The ...

Electric Heating in a Busbar, Modeled with LiveLink for Solid Edge

This tutorial model of the Joule heating effect in a busbar demonstrates how to synchronize an assembly between Solid Edge and COMSOL, how to modify the geometry from COMSOL, and how to run a geometric parametric sweep.

The Blasius Boundary Layer

The incompressible boundary layer on a flat plate in the absence of a pressure gradient is usually referred to as the Blasius boundary layer. The steady, laminar boundary layer developing downstream of the leading edge eventually becomes unstable to Tollmien-Schlichting waves and finally transitions to a fully turbulent boundary layer. Due to its fundamental importance, this type of flow has ...

Ion Funnel

An electrodynamic ion funnel provides an efficient means of transferring ions from regions of high pressure to high vacuum. The ion funnel can couple devices which generally operate at pressures of different orders of magnitude, such as ion mobility spectrometers and mass spectrometers, allowing mixtures of ionized gases to be separated and analyzed while minimizing losses. This model ...

Modifying Imported CAD Geometry with the Deformed Geometry Interface

When you are working with foreign CAD or ECAD data, such as files in the STEP, GDS, or IGES file formats, or any of the other supported formats, you may think that you need to re-import a new CAD file and start your modeling over from scratch if you want to study a change in size or shape. But, in fact, you can modify the geometry that you've imported with some clever usage of the Deformed ...

Electrochemical Glucose Sensor

Electrochemical glucose sensors use amperometric methods to measure the concentration of glucose in a sample. This example models the diffusion of glucose and ferri/ferrocyanide redox mediators in a unit cell of electrolyte above an interdigitated electrode. The sensor gives a linear response over a suitable range of concentrations. The Electroanalysis interface is used to couple the chemical ...

Optimization of a Tuning Fork, Modeled with LiveLink for Pro/ENGINEER

This model computes the fundamental eigenfrequency and eigenmode for a tuning fork that is synchronized from Pro/ENGINEER via the LiveLink interface. The length of the fork is then optimized so that the tuning fork sounds the note A, 440 Hz.

Caughey-Thomas Mobility in a Semiconductor

With an increase in the parallel component of the applied field, carriers can gain energies above the ambient thermal energy and be able to transfer energy gained by the field to the lattice by optical phonon emission. The latter effect leads to a saturation of the carriers mobility. The Caughey Thomas mobility model adds high field velocity scattering to an existing mobility model (or to a ...

Gate Valve in Pipe Branch

A gate valve in a piping branch point is simulated using high viscosity in the gate itself. A parametric run varies gate position from 100% open to fully closed
