Radiative Heat Transfer in a Utility Boiler

This model uses the discrete-ordinates method (DOM) to analyze the radiative heat transfer in a utility boiler with internal obstacles. DOM is one of the most useful radiation models for prediction of radiative heat fluxes on the furnace walls of a combustion chamber. With this model, the behavior of the temperature and heat flux within the furnace and on the heat surfaces can be easily obtained ...

Thermal Modeling of a Microchannel Heat Sink

Thermal management has become a critical aspect of today’s electronic systems, which often include many high-performance circuits that dissipate large amounts of heat. Many of these components require efficient cooling to prevent overheating. Some of these components, such as processors, require a heat sink with cooling fins that are exposed to forced air from a fan. This discussion develops ...

Heated Vertical Plate

This model shows the application of COMSOL Multiphysics in modeling the non-isothermal flow of gases at relatively low flow velocities. Here, a vertical plate is held at a constant temperature, which is higher than that of the surrounding air. When the warm plate heats the air near its surface, the air starts rising upward due to its change in density. The model assumes that the work done ...

Thermoelectric leg

A thermoelectric leg is a fundamental component of a thermoelectric cooler (or heater). For example, a thermocouple is a thermoelectric module typically made of two thermoelectric legs: one made of p-type and of one n-type semiconductor material which are connected in series electrically and in parallel thermally.

Plate Heat Exchanger

The model has its emphasis on heat transport in a very small heat exchanger which is commonly used in the field of Micro Electro Mechanical Systems, MEMS. In this case it might be a reactive processes that needs heating. The heat exchanger itself is constructed by stacking several pleated sheets or plates on top of each other whilst leaving a gap in between. The fluid used to transfer heat ...

Thermal Modeling of a Power Transformer

This model describes the temperature distribution in a coil-shaped power transformer which is cooled by forced flow of transformer oil from the bottom. The properties of the oil varies strongly with temperature, making modeling of the fluid flow in combination with the heat transfer necessary. The results show the position of the "hot spot", and that there is an unexpected radial flow ...

Convective Cooling of a Potcore Inductor

The inductor is a common component in a variety of electrical devices. Its applications include power transformation and measurements, and it can also be used together with capacitors to create oscillators. In small devices with many components, such as in laptops, heat generation can be a problem and must be accounted for in the design. This axi-symmetric model studies the heat transfer in ...

Optimizing a Thermal Process

A thermal processing scenario is modeled whereby two heaters raise the temperature of a gas flowing through a channel. The Optimization Module is used to find the heater power to maximize the outflow temperature, while maintaining a constraint on the peak temperature at the heaters themselves.

Non-Isothermal Flow Around a Cooling Device

This model shows the application of COMSOL Multiphysics in the modeling of non-isothermal laminar flow of fluids (in this case a gas). The model assumes that the expansion work done by the gas is negligible, that the variations in temperature are obtained through external heating, and that the fluid is an ideal gas. The model treats the steady flow of a gas over a fin, which is heated by an ...

Buoyancy–driven μPCR for DNA Amplification

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is one of the most effective methods in molecular biology, medical diagnostics, and biochemical engineering in amplifying a specific sequence of DNA. There has been a great interest in developing portable PCR-based lab-on-a-chip systems for point-of-care applications and one strategy that seems very promising is natural convection-based PCR. This model studies ...
