Linear extrusion and geometries with different dimensions

Hello,
I have a question regarding linear extrusion. I have an irregularly shaped 2-D plate (from a CAD file), and I would like to couple it to a 3-D air space (ideally with a similar shape as the plate, but thicker). In 3.5a, one could just add another geometry (like in the tutorial model "Vibrations of a Disk Backed by an Air-Filled Cylinder"). It seems that in 4.0 one has to make two separate geometries and use linear extrusion. Am I correct? Is there a way of transforming my 2-D plate into 3-D with COMSOL?
Possibly, it might be easier to learn to use a CAD programme and plot the whole setup in 3-D..
